Satguru Travels Rwanda, one of the leading travel services provider, on Saturday 25th January 2020 visited Gisimba Memorial Center to extend love to underprivileged children with a donation of stationary and commitment to subscribe 80 children for Mutuelle de Santé during a fan-filled day that was characterized by entertainment, interaction with kids, sharing lunch and soft drinks.
Children in a group of modern dance entertained guests with cheering performances before Satguru staff engaged with kids advising them to work hard for a better future.
Patrick Rutikanga, the After School Program Director at Gisimba Memorial Center took guests through history of the center and commended them for the generosity, putting children out of isolation and urged more institutions to extend love to such children.
“We are delighted with the visit of Satguru. Such social interactive events amaze kids and leave great memories,” he observed.
Gisimba Memorial Center formely known as Gisimba Orphanage is a training center that equips children with life skills. It protects vulnerable children, running an After School Program from its center based in Nyamirambo with educational, recreational and cultural opportunities for community youth.
Currently, the center provides residence to 210 children. During holidays, the center serves as a camp for non-resident kids and organizes various value and skill-based educational sessions that help them in their day to day life.
Activities held at the center include arts, crafts, painting, dancing, singing, training sessions on basic computer skills, different games, among others.
Gisimba Memorial Center is the oldest and most well-known orphanage in Rwanda. It began as place for unwanted children in the 1970s in the family home of Melchior Gisimba. In 1976 his son Pierre took over, followed by Grandson Damas in 1986. In 1990 they acquired the current center’s building and during the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi, Damas managed to hide 300 people in its roof saving their lives.
When Rwanda began state orphanages in 2012, Gisimba was supported in reunifying children back with relatives or foster families.
