The 19th Commemoration of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi is marked in each Umudugudu (village) under the theme: “Let us commemorate the Genocide against the Tutsi as we strive for self reliance” In order for genocide survivors to attain this goal of self reliance, there must be support from the community and organization reaching out to various communities of survivors who are in need of forging a life, after going through the dark days of genocide
In a bid to contribute to this national cause- of supporting genocide survivors towards self reliance, Star Africa Media, a Chinese pay television service provider has donated equipment that will facilitate a Ngororero based survivors’ youth cooperative to implement their business plans.
As part of the agenda, Isamaza youth cooperative were given two computers, a 32inch TV screen and a decoder courtesy of Star Africa media- a Chinese multimedia company in Rwanda. The equipments worth over Rwf1million will be used to generate income for the youth cooperative- which is mainly composed of genocide survivors in Ngororero sector, Ngororero district, Western Province.The equipment was handed over by the Minister of Youth and ICT, Jean Philbert Nsengimana, who was accompanied by the CEO of Star Africa Media, Justin Liu, and local government leaders.The cooperative members had requested for support with such equipment, and they are very lucky because Star Africa media has come with the equipment by coincidence. This should be a startup for you project idea, which can transform the lives of the community and earn income for the cooperative” the Minister said. The cooperative chairperson, Jean Pierre Kwizera, said that the donation will be used to start up an IT and multi media center in Ngororero town center and provide training to the youth as a response to the problem of unemployment and skills gaps in the community. “The donation will benefit 48 members of Isamaza youth cooperative who have had problems of unemployment, lack of life skills, and also promote developmental activities in the community” Kwizera said. Kwizera says that the donated computers and TV sets will be helpful in implementing their earlier development plans. The equipment will be used to start up the planned Public Secretariat and Multi-media center as a way of creating jobs and incomes for the unemployed members from also have a plan of and though the cooperative has some income generating activities, such as like livestock keeping, they also have acquired a piece of land which they would like to use for modern livestock farming. The National Commission Against Genocide (CNLG) has reminded all institutions operating in Rwanda to set aside time for commemorating the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi, which kicked off on April 7 countrywide.
CNLG says that the event of commemorating genocide is vitally important to Rwandans, especially the survivors and enable the community to come up with developmental strategies. The CEO of Star Africa Media, Justin Liu assured the genocide survivors that his company would be there for them and supports their activities along the way, so as to have a bright future. Liu said that Star Africa Media is a development partner in the Rwandan community and their participation in the genocide commemoration comes with active faith which is evident in the equipment donated to the youth cooperative.
