Rwanda peacekeeping forces serving United Nations African Union Hybrid Mission in Darfur (UNAMID) have launched Quick Impact Projects (QIP) for the local communities in the area of Korma, North Darfur.

The projects were inaugurated by Rwanda Battalion 31 (17 Infantry battalion of RDF) in collaboration with the local population. The projects, funded by UNAMID through the FHQ CIMIC Section,  began on 26 Aug 2012 and with the aim of improving the living conditions of local population, mainly the vulnerable ones.

The projects comprise of the following: building of 03 classrooms and rehabilitation of 02 classrooms and an office for Boys’ school; building of 04 classrooms and 02 offices for Girls’ School, building of a Youth Center.

Besides of constructing the basic infrastructure as detailed below, the Rwanbatt 31 leveled the ground for recreational and entertainment purposes for youth.

The inauguration and handover ceremony of these infrastructures to the local beneficiaries was presided over by the Acting Joint Special Representative of the AU/UN General Secretaries, Madam Aichatou Mindaoudou who thanked the good collaboration between the Rwandan Battalion and the local population.

She commended the Rwanbatt 31 for the sacrifice in the implementing the projects. She noted the distance of 23kms and bad roads the troops had to daily travel in carrying out the needed works for timely completion of the tasks. She praised them for the work well done.

Through these QIPs, the UNAMID intends to win the hearts and minds of the local population and therefore increase cooperation and trust between the local and UNAMID with view to facilitate the implementation of UNAMID Mandate of protection of civilians.

Most importantly, the projects will allow the children of KUMA GARADAYAT locality and surroundings to learn in good condition and subsequently give them hope for better and improved life.
