Kigali, 4 February 2012 – The Rwanda Utilities Regulatory Agency (RURA), in cooperation with the Ministry of Youth and ICT and telecommunications operators, today launched the national SIM card registration program.
The project aims to register both new and existing SIM cards issued by telecommunications operators in Rwanda. The registration will be done electronically for National ID holders and manually for foreign residents by scanning travel documents.
Speaking at the launch, the Minister of Youth and ICT, Jean Philbert Nsengimana said:
“I urge Rwandans to embrace this exercise because it will help telecom subscribers promote public security and different crimes such as kidnappings, terrorism, drug trafficking, theft of handset and others will be reduced”.
Infrastructure has been established that will allow mobile operators to conduct online verification via the National ID database as well as electronic registration and activation of new and existing mobile subscribers.
