MTN Foundation was established in 2009 by MTN Rwanda with a vision of giving back to society and impacting the quality of lives in Rwandan communities in a meaningful way. The MTN Foundation is passionate about its partnership with Imbuto Foundation in a noble cause to support young and vulnerable children in Rwanda to pursue their education.
Mr. Khaled Mikkawi, MTN’s Chief Executive Officer asserts that MTN Foundation is looking forward to working with Imbuto in this effort that will give vulnerable children in our country the most valuable opportunity to be the best they can be.
The MTN Foundation educational scholarship program worth 90 million Rwf was established in December 2011 to support 100 vulnerable children in high school from Senior 1 to Senior 6 offering each child 150,000 Rwf per year to cover the cost of fees and essential scholastic materials.
The First Lady Mrs. Jeannette Kagame expressed appreciation towards the partnership between MTN and Imbuto Foundation. She stated that education is a cornerstone of development, and was delighted MTN had decided to embark on this journey with Imbuto Foundation, in providing educational opportunities to young boys and girls and setting ground for a prosperous Rwanda.
Over the past nine years, Imbuto Foundation has provided 5,000 scholarships to young academically proficient Rwandan youth to complete their secondary schooling. Today, many of them are pursuing higher studies in Rwanda and abroad. It is in the same spirit that MTN Foundation sought partnership with Imbuto to realize greater heights in the Education of the vulnerable children in Rwanda.
The MTN Foundation focuses on a number of initiatives; Education, Health and Economic Empowerment. In 2011, Health activities included the ‘Operation Smile’ where over $10,000 was donated to support Cleft lip operation. Every year, over 250 persons with Cleft lips in Rwanda are operated and given back their smile. Donated Sanitary Kit in Rusizi, distributed 2080 Mosquito nets in both Health Centers and Schools to eradicate Malaria in Rwanda
In collaboration with Ministry of Health and the Blood Bank, MTN Staff donate blood to save lives every December of each year. MTN foundation has also supported people living with HIV/AIDS Virus. Through the Foundation, financial and moral support was extended to RWINKWAVU hospital in Kayonza District, Eastern Province not only to improve their standards of living but also to give them hope and a caring sense of belonging. A Friesian cow was given to an orphanage center in Kamonyi District to enable the orphans in the camp access fresh milk thereby improving their nutrition standards.
Under the Education, the Foundation has donated 252 computers in 7 schools across the country and connected more than 5500 students and 300 teachers on internet to leverage ICT in Education. This has been done in collaboration with Ministry of Education. A classroom block was also built for REMERA Catholic Primary school and 5 football pitches were renovated in 5 various schools in effort to encourage games and sports in the young generation.
With the MTN Staff “CAN – DO” spirit, MTN Rwanda has consistently and successfully participated in 21 days of yellow care every year since 2007 going forward, with tangible projects that positively impact our society in Health, education and community development.
So far, over 40 Million Rwandan francs have been spent on these annual 21 days of Yello care projects.
Under the Economic empowerment, the Foundation has provided building materials to Eradicate Nyakatsi grass sachet houses and supported the Muslim community during the IDI festivity with more than 11 million Rwandan Francs for establishment of Cooperatives.
Under the environmental conservation projects, the Foundation planted over 1 million trees seedlings and more than 120,000 trees planted in different locations across the country in collaboration with Rwanda Environment Management Authority. These trees have greatly conserved our environment and improved climate changes in the country. The Foundation has also participates in monthly Community work UMUGANDA and at the same time donating to the City of Kigali 120 Dustbins in the drive to Keep Kigali City Clean.
MTN Foundation is aimed at establishing sustainable initiatives that promote partnerships with our communities and as the best vehicle for effectively managing MTN’s positive social impacts. The Foundation was endorsed by the MTN Group and operates in all the 22 countries in Africa. The Foundation is funded by up to 1% of profit after tax (PAT) per year.
