Heroes’ Day to be celebrated across Rwanda

Celebrations to mark the 19th Heroes’ Day will be held at the village level to engage citizen participation at the grass roots and for neighbours to share in the spirit of the national day. Kamali Karegesa, Executive Secretary of Chancellery for Heroes, National Orders and Decoration made the announcement today.

“People will listen, ask questions and give answers on their own. So, it is more natural and an act they own. The impact will therefore be different from previous years. Besides, the coverage is countrywide since it will be organised at the Imidugudu level across the country.” “We want to honour Rwanda’s heroes and share lessons about heroism and make the link between heroism and Agaciro, since the theme for this year’s celebrations is ’Heroism is the foundation of dignity and development’” he said.

“Qualities of a hero are like those you attribute to dignity, you therefore have two related virtues that influence each other in a positive way and since our aim as a country is moving towards self worth and self reliance, this will no doubt encourage patriotism and ultimately Rwandans will be ready to confront any obstacle that may come our way”

Karegesa noted that heroism is a virtue that leads one to perform an extraordinary act that is very useful for any society. Such an act may influence in a positive way the well-being of the whole society. “Heroism involves sacrifice to the extent of one losing his/her life. So, when we celebrate Heroes’ Day, it is to honour our heroes, to remember and cherish their acts.

Heroes day also intends to arouse the interest of the public since the fallen or living heroes serve as good examples for others, especially the youth” Karegesa said. The National Heroes’ Day will be celebrated on Friday February 1 and is a public holiday in Rwanda.
