BRALIRWA partners with Unity Club, provides quality shelter to Genocide widows in Kayonza

In yet another move geared towards improving the quality of life in the Rwandan community, the country’s largest brewery Brasseries et Limonaderies du Rwanda (BRALIRWA) partnered with Unity to build a modern house for eight elderly widows of the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi.

Unity club is an association that brings together current and former senior government officials and their spouses that is currently chaired by Rwanda’s First Lady, Jeannette Kagame.

Beneficiaries of this act of kindness are elderly widows who were bereft of means to forge forward after the 1994 mayhem completely wiped out their children, spouses and relatives.

The eight widows whose ages range between 80 and 90 years will live together in the modern house located in Nyamirama Sector in Kayonza district in Rwanda’s Eastern Province.

Overcome by emotions and hardly audible, one of the beneficiaries acknowledged that words would not be sufficient to express her gratitude.

“I am short of words to express my happiness for the support I have received from you today, and that which I have got from AVEGA, Unity Club and the Government of Rwanda in yesteryears. This kindness is just beyond my comprehension”.

In her message at this housewarming ceremony, the Deputy President of Unity Club who also is the Deputy Governor of the National Bank of Rwanda Monique Nsanzabaganwa explained the rationale of the activity.

“By living together, these old women will form a new family in which they can all feel at home and catered for. It will inspire them to move forward and to live meaningful lives. We cannot leave them on their own; their lives were affected by the Genocide that killed all their children and relatives. Making sure that these eight and other such survivors forge forward and find peace despite heavy memories is the job of each one of us.”

To ensure the elderly widows are fully catered for, the BRALIRWA –Unity Club partnership in conjunction with the Association of Widows of Genocide (AVEGA) hired two caretakers to tend to their daily needs.

For BRALIRWA, partnerships to improve the lives of vulnerable Rwandans will continue as the company’s Managing Director Jonathan Hall shared at the ceremony in Kayonza.

“We are privileged to partner with Unity Club in this noble cause. We have been doing it in other parts of the country and will surely continue as long as it is needed,” he noted.

Thanks to similar partnerships, decent housing has been provided for elderly genocide widows in Kamonyi, Rulindo and Huye districts.

Also other groups of vulnerable survivors have been catered for through similar endeavours.

For instance, BRALIRWA in 2014 contributed to a project of Imbuto Foundation to build homes for orphans of the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda.

Some twenty homes of these were inaugurated in 2014 by Her Excellency, the First Lady of Rwanda Janet Kagame.

Also, other social enterprising initiatives have been established to further the brewery’s contribution to socioeconomic transformation and thus towards national development.

A case closer to Kayonza district where the elderly home was inaugurated is BRAMIN Maize Farm in Ndego sector which has employed hundreds of locals in this rural sector.
