Akagera Business Group launched a market first and a global leading technology in vehicle fleet management from GeoTab, which poses to revolutionize transport business in the country.
GeoTab GO6 as codenamed helps car owners and vehicle fleet managers to keep up with the operations of their vehicles at any time and place. Using the latest Geographical Positioning System (GPS) hardware, which works hand in hand with the Checkmate Asset Management software, GO6 gives timely and accurate reports on the conditions of a car, the behavior of the driver, and routes of its movement.
Through its navigable interface, GO6 allows one the ability to update the system with new driving rules such as, the routes to take, speed to not exceed, while at the same time offering accurate information on vehicle asset conditions, engine status, fuel and oil consumption among others. For instance, with the in-vehicle system installed, one is given the ability to dictate the maximum speed a driver should not exceed and receives reports in the event of violation of the rule. Also, the car owner or fleet manager is given the opportunity to track other driving behaviors like when the driver takes unnecessary routes, which are not part of a given trip they are undertaking. Car owners can now avoid the misuse of the vehicle by drivers who may use it for personal activities disguising to be on duty all on company expense, thanks to GO6.
GeoTab GO6 uses GPS hardware and Checkmate Asset Management software to record all required data, which is then uploaded to the administrator account using the Internet. Nonetheless, absence of Internet connectivity cannot affect the operation of the satellite-monitored system of the GO6 platform. It only means that upload of the recorded data to the administrator account are done once in a connected area. In terms of management, the GeoTab software used in the GO6 device can be accessed via computers, mobile phones, or tablets for convenient management of fleets.
Protection From Being Tampered
Being an in-vehicle platform, it is easy that the drivers can tamper with such systems. However as Francis Katabarwa, the Division Manager of Akagera Security & Safety Systems said, “GO6 is monitored through satellite connection, which means it can be seen by the control center no matter its location and will signal off alarms to the administrator in the event of tampered operation.”
The fear that drivers can misuse the system is eliminated when one installs GO6 as the system for fleet management. “GO6 is wired within the vehicle’s own body and is monitored using satellite connection and thus any form of being tampered with is detected and signals off reports to the administrator.”
Immense Advantages
With the GeoTab GO6 fleet management platform installed in the vehicle, owners are not only enabled to easily and accurately monitor their fleets, but several other advantages to the improvement of road transport comes along with the system.
One such advantage is monitoring driver behavior. Most road accidents according to Traffic Police are due to poor driving practices. But with GO6 installed in a car, it is easier to detect these bad road practices and thus prevent their terrible consequences. “For instance, if a particular driver is fond of over speeding, GeoTab GO6 reports this bad practice, which can help the fleet manager to punish the driver and if misbehavior persists, suspend him / her from work,” Mr. Katabarwa explained.
With the ability to give reports on car conditions before it is put on duty, the GeoTab platform allows car owners and fleet managers to safeguard against road accidents caused by mechanical problems. In case of a road accident and any other disputed happening to which data is needed, GO6 provides the platform through which information can be recollected and utilized in settling disputes. “For instance, in claiming insurance payouts, it is possible to determine the cause of an accident by using data recorded by GO6,”
Akagera Security and Safety Systems is the latest addition to the Akagera Business Group, which was founded on the knowledge that there were many challenges that Rwanda faced, which could be reversed and prevented if the right security and safety systems were put in place. At slightly more than four months in operation, the division is already making historical steps that are set to revolutionize security and safety in whole sectors, just like what is expected of the recently introduced GeoTab GO6 platform.
According to Peterson Mutabazi, the Principal Engineer in charge of Transport at Rwanda’s Ministry of Infrastructure, the GeoTab technology presents an opportunity to improve transport especially through its features that facilitate the prevention of road accidents. “This is a revolutionary technology for Rwanda’s transport sector and no doubt that the GeoTab platform will go a long way in fighting bad road practices, which have in the past been responsible for most of the accidents.”
Besides the initial cost of purchasing the device, the GeoTab platform also has a monthly service fee. As Katabarwa shared, the cost will depend on the number of vehicles one has in their fleet and that the costs are all user-friendly.
