At the Women’s Day celebrations in Shyira Sector, Nyabihu, the First Lady Jeannette Kagame has hailed the achievements by Rwandan women and applauded their role in reconstructing and developing the country.
She also highlighted the efforts made by the country as a whole and the government in particular to promote gender equality and defend women’s rights.
“With the support of the government, women have taken up new roles and succeeded in them,” Kagame remarked.
She also lauded development partners who support the government’s efforts to promote women’s empowerment, and called on everyone to support campaigns that do not just aim at improving the wellbeing of women, but rather emphasize the importance of women and men working together for the progress of the country and its people.
At the occasion of the Women’s Day celebrations, the First Lady donated cows to 52 vulnerable families in Nyabihu.
The event also marked the launch of Women’s Month, during which various activities will take place aimed at women’s empowerment. They include sensitisation on financial literacy and savings, project management, family planning, early childhood development as well as education and sanitation.
Kagame called on all Rwandans, both women and men, to take part in the events, as she also questioned why there would still be cases of early pregnancies, malnourishment, poor hygiene or children dropping out of school despite the existence of numerous initiatives and mechanisms to address these issues.
